Noor Riyadh
Johanna Grawunder’s designs span the fields of architecture and interiors, with projects ranging from custom commissions and large-scale public installations to limited-edition and mass-produced furniture and objects. She is best known for her light installations.
Born in San Diego, the American artist studied architecture at California Polytechnic State University and graduated in 1984. Her work combines technology and craftmanship and is marked by its sculptural nature, as well as a sense of quality and longevity, which has been informed by the contemporary landscape.
As an artist, Grawunder focuses on architectural principles and proportions, non-precious building materials and technological innovation applied to light. She is interested in the language of technology as opposed to the actual technology. This is apparent in her work as it combines digital colors, lights and the high-performance materials surrounding us.
Over the years, she has collaborated with many leading architects and designers, creating ad hoc lighting installations for their projects, as well as designing products for major companies. She was awarded the Collective Influence Honoree 2018 by Collective Design, and her work is included in the permanent collections of many museums in the United States and Europe.
