Sam Durant is an interdisciplinary artist who has been exhibiting internationally for more than 30 years. His methodology is research-based with an emphasis on social engagement, often working with communities and groups in collaborative and performative formations. Growing up, the artist lived through different social movements that inspired him to create his artwork based on his personal experience. Shaped by the educational culture and the socio-political context of his surroundings, Durant’s artistic ideology resonates with present-day social and cultural concerns.
Sam Durant’s notable exhibitions include the Yokohama Triennial, 2017; MOCA, Los Angeles, 2016; Documenta 13, 2012; the Venice Biennale, 2007 and 2003; the Stedelijik Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent, 2004; and the Kunstverein Dusseldorf, 2003, among others.
