Suspended from the ceiling, as if falling from the sky, is the mangled fuselage of a helicopter. Hundreds of undulating incandescent light tubes descend from it above an array of various metropolitan relics – neon signs, fossilized trash, and other human-born creations. Falling Angel seems to sporadically come alive with a burst of pulsing sound as the tubes flash when making contact with the Tesla coils below. Playing with light as much as interacting with darkness, Max Hooper Schneider’s artwork follows his earlier thematics and habits while also showcasing an evolution, embracing the beauty and sublime of the uncanny. The visitor is invited to step into a space that forms part of the “climax communities” that morphed into the pioneers of devastated biomes. Falling Angel makes the visitor ponder about a hypothetical time to come and the relics it would be born from. Were we to disappear and the environment to evolve without us, somehow light would always remain.
