Random International is a post digital art group founded in 2005 by Hannes Koch (b. 1975) and Florian Ortkrass (b. 1975) that explores the impact of technological development on the human condition. The experiential group works across an array of media, including sculpture, sensors, light, kinetics, video, print and sound, often to create responsive or immersive environments.
Early works such as Audience (2008) and Swarm Study / I (2010) affirmed the group’s exploration into collective behavior and seemingly sentient environments. This was catalyzed in 2012 when their work, Rain Room, was first exhibited at the Barbican in London and attracted a large number of visitors, in turn creating a different kind of dissemination of art both in person and online.
