Noor Riyadh
Mariko Mori (b. 1967) is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists to emerge from Japan in the past 50 years. Her practice explores universal questions at the intersection of life, death, reality and technology.
Mori first gained international recognition in the mid-1990s for early works inspired by manga and cyberculture, where she portrayed herself as a cyborg with Tokyo as a backdrop. She also garnered worldwide attention for her interactive installation, Wave UFO, which debuted at Kunsthaus Bregenz in Bregenz in 2003. The installation traveled to 11 cities in the world, including Venice for the 2005 Biennale.
Honoring her own cultural background, the New York and Tokyo-based artist chooses mediums and techniques that best fit the concept for each artwork. In some instances, completely new techniques are developed during her creative process and become a new vocabulary in art.
