Guadalupe Maravilla is a transdisciplinary visual artist, choreographer and healer whose practice originates from his pre-colonial Central American ancestry, the undocumented communities and the cancer community. His performances, objects and drawings include autobiographical narratives directly linked to his personal journey as an artist and human being. His practice and own mythology are deeply rooted in his fight with cancer and his past as an undocumented child escaping the Salvadorian civil war. Maravilla’s artworks and performances often have multiple functions: they are shrines, healing instruments and sculptures. The sculptures are activated in sound ceremonies for audiences from both the general public and marginalized communities. His practice nurtures collective narratives that showcase perseverance in the face of adversity.
His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York City; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Olso; and the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn among others.
