Durant’s research-based practice is inspired by historical movements. Working from archival photographs of public events, the artist selected seven hand-written slogans and transformed them into seven large-format commercial signs. Initially centered on events in the USA that took place in the 1960s and 70s, the series now spans global history. Slogans are chosen for their generality, free from specific references, allowing varied interpretations. By prompting viewers to contemplate the text on these signs, Durant encourages a connection to the past and the enduring significance of specific actions, movements, and historical contexts. Utilizing text and language, Durant probes the construction and interpretation of meaning in society and current affairs.
