Jesse Woolston’s Color Theory (2022) comprises three visually striking LED sculptures, each a multi-sensory experience that tells a story about our understanding of color in art history. The work frames the relationship between man and nature’s enormous scale of nature in a new, more intimate way, positioning the viewer in between nature, the urban landscape, the past, and the present.

Woolston uses computational processes to analyze painters’ impression of nature across different periods. He then uses this information for his sculptures’ own representation of nature: a mimicking of the fluid behavior of the ocean, with a color palette drawn from Woolston’s art-historical data and the surroundings of the city of Riyadh.
