Chromalusion

Chromalusion is a site-specific installation comprised of two mirrors facing each other at an angle that produces an optical illusion. By altering the viewer’s reflection, the work asks the audience to reassess how they perceive themselves. The disorienting floor – an infinity mirror that creates the sense of an endless tunnel-like void – likewise encourages viewer to be vigilant and aware.

Nawaf Alkuhaimi chose the installation’s red and green colored lights to both refer to routine ophthalmology eye tests (the artist is also a physician) and to enhance the works’ subtle optical illusion. The subtlety of the illusion underlines the nuances in perceptions of ourselves, as the work shows us to be complex and multifaceted human beings.
