Based on myriad textual sources and post-digital processes, Stefan Brüggemann’s work confronts paradoxical universes such as graffiti, Minimalist and Conceptual aesthetics, consequently unrolling a unique “punk minimalism” vocabulary. Combining sculpture, video, painting, and drawing, Brüggemann is concerned with language and “words that become images”, questioning the idea of the transfer or image of information. His “sign-images” reactivate the memory of an event, creating imaginary spaces and experiences for the public. Most often drawn from newspapers or film titles, the texts in his works are also sometimes crossed out, superimposed, intersecting the materiality of text with the plasticity of artistic language itself.
His recent solo exhibitions include Hauser & Wirth, Los Angeles, 2023; Mostyn, Llandudno, UK, 2023; Kotaro Nukaga, Tokyo, 2021; Hauser & Wirth, St Moritz, Switzerland, 2020; Centre Pompidou, Forum, Paris, 2019; Hauser & Wirth, London, 2019; CGAC Santiago de Compostela, 2012; Yvon Lambert Gallery, Paris, 2008; and Kunsthalle Bern, 2008.
