Iván Argote’s practice reimagines the public space, what inhabits it and the purpose it serves. With a dash of derision, poetry, and tenderness, his videos, sculptures, and performances challenge common conceptions about heritage and the relationships between individuals. Argote’s interventions take place in the street, public transportation, and museums, but monuments are at the core of his practice. His aim is to openly wonder about what constitutes our cities and what is born from our shared use of the space.
Iván Argote’s work has been exhibited in several individual and group exhibitions including the Cuenca Biennale, 2023; Kunsthalle Münster, 2023; Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2022 and 2020; Desert X, Coachella Valley, 2019; MAXXI, Rome, 2018; BIENALSUR, Bogota, 2017; Thessaloniki Biennale, 2015; Sao Paulo Biennale, 2012; CA2M, Madrid, 2012; Palais de Tokyo, 2011; among others.
