Hana Almilli is a multimedia artist, textile designer, and poet. Amilli’s research-based practice rediscovers her identities through the material culture of textiles and assemblages, such as those of the Turkish, Syrian, Kurdish, and Saudi peoples who make up her lineage. Almilli has assigned herself the task of perpetually creating new forms of material culture. She does this in order to combat the concept of al ghorba, which means “estrangement in a foreign land”. Her practice interrogates nostalgia through weaving, dyeing, embroidering, and photography techniques.
In 2022, she participated in the first edition of the Intermix residency, which was organized by the Ministry of Culture’s Visual Arts Commission and Fashion Commission in collaboration with Athr Gallery. In 2019, Almilli had her first solo show, “Sada Kharaet Ghorbati” (“Echoes of My Alienation”), at the Isabelle Percy West Gallery at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
