Born in 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Lives and works in Chicago, USA.
Edra Soto’s projects are motivated by civic and social actions. Her work establishes the object as an archival representation, drawing on Puerto Rican history and culture, the enduring legacy of the African slaves brought to the new continent, and, in doing so, raises questions about the legacy of colonialism, diasporic identity, and social life. She challenges the public to be introspective and reflect on socio-economic conditions and forgotten cultural knowledge. She often works with aluminum and PVC, among other materials, that refer to the Puerto Rican diaspora and give her work a deeper value related to common elements of the island’s residential architecture.
Edra Soto has participated in shows at the Surrey Art Gallery, British Columbia, 2023; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, 2022; Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, Missouri, 2022; and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago, 2018, among others.
