Tuwaiq Sculpture 2025 concludes with a focus on process, participation, and public art across Riyadh.

The sixth edition of Tuwaiq Sculpture has officially concluded, reinforcing Riyadh’s ongoing commitment to public art and cultural engagement. Organized by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City under the Riyadh Art program, the symposium and its accompanying exhibition took place over 40 days at ROSHN Front, welcoming thousands of residents and visitors to explore the artistic process up close.

This year’s theme, “From Then to Now: Joy in the Struggle of Making,” invited reflection on the craft and creativity behind sculpture—emphasizing not only the final work, but the journey of making itself.

From studio to public space

Held from January 15 to February 8, the symposium’s live sculpting brought together 30 artists from 23 countries, each producing a large-scale sculpture on-site. Visitors were able to observe artists at work, gaining insight into techniques, tools, and the evolution of form.

The curatorial team, led by Sebastian Betancur-Montoya (Lead Curator) and Dr. Manal Al-Harbi (Associate Curator), guided this year’s artistic direction. Reflecting on the event, Betancur-Montoya said, “This year’s symposium and exhibition celebrated the enduring power of art to connect people, transcend boundaries, and inspire communities.”

The completed sculptures were then displayed at a public exhibition from February 12 to 24, providing a final opportunity for audiences to view all works together before they are installed in public spaces across Riyadh. These sculptures will become part of the city’s growing permanent collection, contributing to Riyadh Art’s goal of transforming the capital’s creative landscape and economy.

Public engagement and participation

Community involvement played an important role throughout the program. In total, approximately 3,000 people engaged with Tuwaiq Sculpture 2025 through a range of activities:

  • 1,263 attended live sculpting sessions
  • 1,089 visited the final exhibition
  • 572 participated in interactive events
  • 774 joined educational and guided tours

The public program also included 11 panel discussions, 10 workshops, 6 masterclasses, and 4 artist conversations, offering various opportunities for dialogue and learning around sculpture, creativity, and the role of art in public life.

A continuing contribution to Riyadh’s urban identity

All 30 sculptures created during the symposium will be permanently installed throughout Riyadh, adding new cultural touchpoints across the city. This aligns with Vision 2030, which seeks to enhance quality of life, support artistic expression, and promote cultural exchange.

Tuwaiq Sculpture 2025 continues the tradition of supporting artistic production, international collaboration, and public engagement in Riyadh. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City and Riyadh Art extend our thanks to all participating artists, partners, and audiences for their contributions to this year’s edition.
