Moath Alofi’s Thnan (2022) explores our connection to light through recreations of Obsidian and Basaltic lava. The harshness of volcanoes is presented alongside light’s role as a source of hope. The installation features a black volcano in the process of erupting, with cracks emitting orange light as bright as the sun. The audience is invited to walk and wander, and to interact with the work, holding the ‘lava’ and considering the possibilities light offers us. In Thnan, light is a means to gaze through the gaps in the earth left by ancient eruptions, towards our future.
