Writing with Light – Film Screening: VISIONS OF LIGHT

In our first film of the Writing with Light screenings, we explore the art of cinematography through an examination of its greatest historical moments, helping our audience to appreciate its development as a technical skill and essential part of the film’s expression. Our host will discuss with Stuart Samuels, the film’s Director, academic, and University of Penn film professor, this landmark film’s debut at Cannes and why it is still celebrated to this day as an essential film in the study of cinematography.

Writing with Light – Film Screening: VISIONS OF LIGHT

Noor Riyadh

Since the dawn of time, light has been an intimate companion to the human experience. From the moment we open our eyes to witness the sun’s rise, to the moon’s crescent in the night sky, the play of light upon our senses has filled our imaginations. All film begins and ends with light and no medium has done more to capture its magic. And just as the written word on a page gave birth to a plethora of internal narrative universes for us to explore, light upon film launched the expression of our inner world into new realms. The festival’s Writing with Light film program celebrates the cinematographers, the light scribes, who through their craft have brought the medium to life. First, through an initial film celebrating legendary cinematographers throughout history, then through screening two Saudi films of exemplary cinematographic integrity.
