Children just love rainbows! Here’s a fun activity to gain some ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from your little ones. With just a few simple everyday items – think reflective CDs and stretched plastic film – and a giant bubble to step into, they can observe the wonderful spectrum of rainbow colors, and then re-create it all using pens and crayons. • Using simple observation of everyday objects and how they refract light, children learn about the rainbow color spectrum. • The children take turns stepping into and being surrounded by a giant bubble. Lights directed on the bubble cause a multi-colored spectrum to become visible, opening up the child’s eyes to how light contains a variety of colors. • Children will then be asked to reproduce the colors they see using pens and crayons. Learning Outcomes • What colors make up a rainbow? • What is a color spectrum? • Why do the colors appear? (Refraction of light.)
