Reto Steiner’s Turbulent Past depicts two columns connected by two stones. The two columns are not rigid but seem to be stretchy like rubber. The somewhat comic-like formulation underlines the questioning view of the past. The column symbolizes stability, strength, and supporting power; and due to its upright position, it can also be perceived as an embodiment of the human form. The pillar can therefore also stand for ‘great’ personalities who are viewed as ‘pillars’ of a society or community.
But what if the pillar were to wobble? What if it were to bend under the weight of creation? These questions, but also the notion of what emerges from failure, are explored through this sculpture. With this pillar arrangement, buckling becomes exciting momentum. The curve of the columns creates something dynamic and human. Architecture becomes a counterpart, a story. Despite the seemingly heavy burden, it remains stable and continues to bear the burden of time.
