Jiyen Lee’s Stain-Rainbow Forest 2.3 (2023-2024) is a sculptural light installation created using 3D printing and nanopattern replication. Inspired by invisible patterns in nature, the newly commissioned artwork depicts instances when these natural phenomena become visible to the human eye through technology.
It is the latest iteration in Lee’s Stain-Rainbow Forest series, which serves as a metaphorical space for imperfect beings to coexist in. Visitors stroll through Lee’s forest composed of reflective discs hanging from the ceiling and fixed to the floor.
As the sculptures spin in the air, the nanofilm imprinted on them reflects a kaleidoscope of colors, effectively dousing the space and the viewer in fragmented rainbows. Though the forest glistens from afar, on closer inspection, its discs carry uniquely flawed patterns from the imprinting process, inspiring the viewer to see the beauty in the insignificant and ordinary.
