WADI HANIFAH
Daan Roosegaarde’s SPARK (2022) is a light installation composed of biodegradable luminous sparks that float in the air, offering a nonpolluting alternative to fireworks. Inspired by natural light sources, namely stars and fireflies, these environmentally friendly floatables are configured to evaporate the same night they are dispersed, illuminating the natural landscape of Wadi Hanifah through sustainable design and technology.
Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in this whimsical display of celebration, where noise and dust are markedly absent. Thousands of organic light materials perform a silent dance in a cloud formation, moved by the wind and shining in an array of colors. As individuals look up in collective wonder, the sparks also create room for private musings.
By reimagining community festivities, the artwork envisions an eco-friendly future where our traditions can be preserved in a novel way, inspiring reflections on our connection to ourselves, each other and nature.
