Sharing Happiness

Hiroyuki Asakawa’s Sharing Happiness explores the themes of communication – mutual understanding through exchange. Asakawa specifically focuses on dialogue in this piece. It allows the viewer to control sound waves and have a conversation by placing two blocks with three focused paraboloids facing each other. The sculpture expresses a mysterious mathematical phenomenon with a primitive stone sculpture.

Asakawa believes artists must constantly propose new values, and his sculptures are imbued with the wonder and beauty of mathematics. His work is playful, yet there is a deeper message. As globalization progresses and brings challenges, dialogue and respect for each other’s differences have never been more important. Asakawa insists we should celebrate, recognize, and respect each other’s differences – and Sharing Happiness is an attempt to move towards such a world.
