Javier Riera’s Places of Geometry and Light (2024) is a geometric light projection made directly on vegetation. The newly commissioned work is inspired by the Land Art movement of the 1970s, which uses natural landscapes to create art forms.
It also pays tribute to traditional Arabic geometric designs by further developing them with technology. In Places of Geometry and Light, the Spanish artist looks to the field of mathematics in the Arab world, where geometry is deeply embedded in the culture, from visual arts to architecture.
Riera believes geometry is the basic language with which nature is constructed. By using light to project geometric patterns, the artist combines energy and the language of nature to draw parallels between us and our surroundings. These intangible similarities invite us to meditate on our connection with the natural world.
