Chris Levine’s Light is Love (2024) is an immersive installation that plays with perception through an LED imaging technique the artist calls a ‘blipvert.’ Based on Levine’s artwork series of the same name, this newly commissioned iteration continues to experiment with the persistence of vision, an optical illusion where the human eye briefly holds on to an image after it is gone.
The blipvert is a slim vertical sculpture fitted with LED lights. As visitors move their heads side to side, the structure projects a strip of an image into their peripheral vision, like a visual echo. Written on this band of projection is a message for the audience: the word ‘love’ in English and Arabic, emphasizing that the purest form of light is love.
Together with laser waveforms and sound elements, the sensorial work inspires a sense of awe and wonder, offering a peaceful refuge from the noise of modern life.
