Juan Caicedo’s Grind appears at first as a massive unprocessed boulder, then soon reveals itself as an interactive sculpture in a public space. Caicedo attempts to defy expectations with a movable, climbable, and touchable stone sculpture that, just like historic stone buildings and monuments, will be subject to natural wear and tear.
Historic stone buildings, sculptures and ruins show marks of the passing of time that we regard as permanent, but these materials were once new, with the marks of the chisel freshly polished out. Grind invites the audience to complete the work by interacting with it and hopefully instilling in them an awareness of their place in the continuum of time; a glimpse into the future, perhaps facilitating the feeling that the future is not some inevitable destiny but a result of actions taken today.
