Granite Blooming in the Brightness of Now

Tuwaiq Sculpture

YEAR

2025

Birgit Cauer’s Granite Blooming in the Brightness of Now features a sawn block of Rosa Royal Granite that has been drilled through in its upper section. It has then been worked and broken by hand to such an extent that an asymmetrical blossom of bizarre shapes is created.

Granite crystallizes from siliceous magma miles deep in the Earth’s crust. For Tuwaiq Sculpture 2025, Cauer has brought it out of the dark interior of the Earth into the light of day. The artist lets this ancient material shine anew by bringing it into a gentle movement, as if before it solidified, and allowing a fragile blossom to grow out of it in the present moment.
