Ricardo Morcillo’s Beings of Light (2024) is a kinetic installation that transforms visitor silhouettes into outlines of dynamic light in real time, bringing people together in an interactive communal experience. Questioning recognition technology and artificial intelligence, the artwork reclaims these surveillance tools by employing generative software to detect passersby. While algorithms distort authentic human identity, Morcillo’s work uses them to convey a hopeful message about equality.
As visitors approach the installation, a kinetic sensor identifies their physical forms and reflects them onto the luminous canvas, transforming humans into playful, dynamic sculptures. Regardless of background, age and gender, the participants create indistinguishable silhouettes, sparking a discourse on unity.
Not only is the viewer inspired to forge a connection with others, but they are also driven to introspection about their true nature and how they present themselves to the world.
