Saeed Gamhawi’s Ala Wath Al Nega (2024) is a sculptural installation composed of 21 illuminated pillars, celebrating the unification of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the reign of King Abdulaziz. The artwork is inspired by Riyadh, one of the first cities in the Kingdom to have electricity installed and where the country’s unification journey began. It is based on the concept of light, drawing attention to its essential role in building a bright future.
Set on the plains of Wadi Hanifah, a towering structure greets visitors from afar. As they approach, the artwork’s form becomes clearer: a collection of 21 light pillars of varying heights, arranged one meter apart, symbolizing the different generations of individuals that continue to shine brightly despite the passage of time.
Gamhawi’s conceptual artwork invites viewers to walk among the pillars and interact with the lights.
