THIRD SPACE* Studio (est. 2022) is an art- and research-led architecture practice in Jeddah founded by Mohsin Ali (b. 1999) and Abdullah Alamoudi (b. 1996).
The British and Saudi duo draw on their combined training in architecture, film, art history, and engineering to create large-scale sculptures and installations.
The practice’s interdisciplinary approach is inspired by the concepts of thirdness, liminality, and in-betweenness. Developed by the postcolonial theorist Homi K. Bhabha, the ‘third space’ proposes that when two opposing cultures interact, their encounter opens up a hybrid site that invites negotiation and exchange. THIRD SPACE* Studio operates at this intersection, exploring how three-dimensional design can convey culturally complex stories.
An example of such a hybrid space is the studio’s recent interactive public installation SINBAD Observatory at SINBAD: I Can See Land, Balad Al-Fann, Jeddah (2023).
