Smith explores diverse artistic mediums, examining the relationship between painting and moving images in art history. Initially focusing on urban environments, her early works depict crowds, chaos, and unconventional forms, as well as delves into the environmental impact of resource extraction in Latin America. The recurring motifs of the spiral and the palimpsest connect industrialization, nature, the human body, archaeology, and scale. Through fragmented montages, she creates filmic and performative experiences that reveal hidden aspects of production and political farce. Ultimately, Smith’s work disrupts conventional meanings, providing a gateway to explore fluid forms and existence.
Smith has exhibited in prestigious institutions, including PS1 and MoMA in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, and Tate Modern in London, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, Museo Tamayo and MUCA Campus UNAM in Mexico City, Museo Amparo in Puebla, and The Modern in Fort Worth along with other important venues.
