Erwin Wurm’s practice spans various mediums in his permanent reinvention of the meaning of sculpture. In order to challenge the tradition of sculptures being ever-lasting three-dimensional objects, Wurm invented his “One Minute Sculptures”. Involving anthropomorphic figures, incongruous play with trivial everyday objects, or instant sculptures defying notions of time, these artworks upend conventions in an ironic and almost absurd way, similar to that of Samuel Beckett and Eugène Ionesco, distorting reality and refusing to conform to a model.
Wurm’s work has been exhibited in several group and solo shows at venues most recently including Peter Marino Art Foundation, Southampton, NY, 2023; Sculpture Biennale ARTZUID, Amsterdam, 2023; PalaisPopulaire, Berlin, 2023; Suwon Museum of Art, South Korea, 2022; and Taipei Fine Arts Museum, 2020, to name a few.
